History of New Year's Christmas tree decorations History of New Year's tree decorations

New Year's beauty

The first Christmas trees appeared in Russia a long time ago, but they were not decorated, but began to do so a little later, repeating the European fashion. There were no Russian-made Christmas decorations at that time; they were ordered from Europe. Even then, Christmas tree decorations were clearly divided into decorations for the wealthy and for those who were poorer. Buying a glass toy for a resident of Russia at that time was the same as buying a car for a modern Russian today. Christmas balls were heavy, since they learned to make thin glass only at the beginning of the 20th century

What kind of toys used to decorate the Christmas tree? Glass Cardboard

Cotton Porcelain

The first glass toys in Russia began to be made in Klin before the First World War. There, artel craftsmen blew glass products for pharmacies and other needs. But during the war years, captured Germans taught them how to blow balls and beads. The Klin factory “Yolochka”, by the way, to this day remains the only factory in Russia that makes beads for Christmas trees.

In addition to glass, toys were made from cardboard. Toys glued together from two halves of convex tinted cardboard made wonderful toys.

There were also toys made of cotton wool wound onto a wire frame: this is how figures of children, angels, clowns, and sailors were decorated. Fake fruits made of papier-mâché and velvet were hung on the Christmas trees.

Christmas tree decorations reflected the history of our country. If it was wartime, then Christmas tree decorations were made like this - airplanes, various military vehicles. They even painted military battles on balloons.

When peacetime came, the toys immediately turned into magical fakirs, fairy-tale characters

How to make a Christmas tree toy

Even before the actual production of the Christmas tree toy begins, a sketch is created: the artist draws the future toy

The process of making Christmas tree decorations begins with blowing. Medical glass is used for this. Craftsmen blow long hollow glass tubes.

First, the tubes are heated and separated into blanks for balls. The heated glass begins to melt, becomes plastic and stretchy.

Then this elongated fused piece of glass is twisted with a special hook on one side and again heated on the burner to the required temperature

And when the glass reaches the desired temperature, the worker simply blows into the tube, blowing out the ball.

Ball blanks look like a large transparent drop. The leg through which the ball was blown does not break off. It will also be needed for silvering and painting.

Silvering stage: the silver solution hardens on the walls of the ball, covering them with a thin, uniform layer. The process is called the "silver mirror reaction."

Then the balls go to the external painting area, where they are coated with one color or another.

And then they get to the most interesting part... To the workshop where the balls are turned into those beautiful Christmas tree decorations

Each Christmas tree decoration is painted manually according to a sample template. Artists paint in parts. For example, first, white snow is applied to the entire batch, then a green Christmas tree, then a house, cover the window in the house, etc.

After the paint is applied, it is fixed by sprinkling various materials. This creates the effect of rough snow or voluminous sparkles.

Trimming and packaging area. Here the balls are circumcised - the extra leg is cut off

All that remains is to put on the familiar caps with a loop

Ready-made toys

...and pack the toys:

The history of the appearance of New Year's toys Completed by: Lidiya Litovchenko, student of class 6 “A” of the Municipal Budgetary Educational Institution of Irkutsk Secondary School No. 77 Supervisor: Konstantinova E. O.

Project goal: Find out the history of the appearance of New Year's toys in different historical periods

Objectives: Find out what the first toys were in Russia. Learn how New Year's toys were made. Determine when the tradition of decorating the New Year tree began.

The history of the emergence of the New Year tradition In ancient times, the Celtic peoples had a custom of worshiping natural forces. It was believed that wildlife inhabited by various supernatural beings, and in order to receive their help, one had to make sacrifices, thus proving one’s respect. They believed that spirits lived in the branches of trees, the location of which determined the harvest and fertility.

The first toys So, the first Christmas tree decorations were exclusively edible. These included apples, potatoes, eggs, nuts, waffles, gingerbread, figured sugar and candy. This is no coincidence. All edible decorations meant something.

The history of the appearance of the New Year's ball According to legend, there was once a lean year, and there were few apples. Then glassblowers from the town of Lauscha in Thuringia in 1848 proposed a temporary replacement for this fruit. There the first glass balls were made from transparent and colored glass. They immediately won hearts, so very soon their production became widespread and profitable business. A decree was issued on the use of silver balls from Lausha as Christmas decorations.

New Year in Russia In Russia, the custom of celebrating the New Year on the night from December 31 to January 1 was introduced by Peter I, and he also ordered that the spruce become the symbol of the New Year.

Variety of New Year's toys

Museum of Christmas Tree Decorations On September 18, 2008, the unique, only in Russia Museum of Christmas Tree Decorations - “Klinskoe Compound” - opened! "Klin Compound" is a museum of Christmas tree decorations in the town of Klin near Moscow. This museum is young and so far the only one in Russia. The museum is located in a nice modern mansion.

Have you ever seen such Christmas trees?

Conclusion Having studied the literature on this issue, I came to the conclusion that initially New Year's toys were not the same as they are now. During the research, I studied the history of the emergence of the tradition of decorating a Christmas tree and the process of making Christmas tree decorations. All the tasks I set were completed.

The first decorated Christmas trees appeared a long time ago - about 400 years ago in Germany. At first, Christmas tree decorations were only edible, but starting from the 17th century, more durable decorations began to be made: fir cones were gilded, empty egg shells were covered with the thinnest layer of hammered brass. There were paper flowers and skillful crafts made from cotton wool, Christmas tree fairies, graceful stars, butterflies and funny figures of animals appeared from silver foil, and tinsel was made from twisted tin wires. At that time, lighted candles, which were attached to branches using thin wire, were also considered fashionable decorations for the forest beauty - alas, from their heat the wax Christmas tree decorations, so beloved in those days, quickly melted.

Slide 3

When did they start decorating the Christmas tree? New Year's balls? According to legend, one day there was a poor harvest of apples, which were one of the main decorations on the Christmas tree. Then the believers came to the glassblowers with a request to make glass apples for the holiday. Since then, balls have been considered classic Christmas tree decorations. It is reliably known that the first Christmas tree balls were made in 1848 in the town of Lauscha in Thuringia (Germany). They were made of transparent or colored glass, coated on the inside with a layer of lead, and decorated with sparkles on the outside.

Slide 4

Gradually, the sale of Christmas decorations became a profitable business, and in 1867 a gasworks, whose artisans, using easily customizable gas burners with a flame of very high temperature, large thin-walled balls were blown out. Soon they began to make glass figurines - birds, bunches of grapes in ceramic forms, jugs, even pipes that you could even blow! Women and children painted the craftsmen's products with gold and silver dust. But after a while glass was replaced by figures made of cardboard; toys with gold and silver embossing and hand-painted were especially popular. Even later, wooden decorations found their place on the tree.

Slide 5

In Russia, as you know, the custom of celebrating the New Year on the night from December 31 to January 1 was introduced by Tsar Peter the Great, and he also ordered that the spruce become the main New Year tree. But only in 1817 did the custom of dressing it up begin, when for the royal holiday of the Nativity of Christ a real green forest beauty was brought into the hall of the royal palace, on which gifts for the entire royal family and children could easily be placed at one time. Gradually, the custom of decorating a Christmas tree for the winter holidays took root in the homes of rich people and those who are poorer. Over time, public Christmas trees began to be organized. The first public Christmas tree was organized in 1852 in St. Petersburg. Almost all toys were imported to Russia from Germany. But there were also a lot of handmade toys.

The most expensive toys were made of glass. In addition to glass, toys were made from cardboard. “Dresden cardboard” was very popular - toys glued together from two halves of convex painted cardboard. Beautiful dolls with paper faces glued to a “body” made of fabric, lace, beads, and paper were also hung on Christmas trees. By the 20th century, faces began to be made convex, made of cardboard, and later - porcelain. There were also toys made of cotton wool wound onto a wire frame: this is how figures of children, angels, clowns, and sailors were decorated. Fake fruits made of papier-mâché and velvet were hung on the Christmas trees.

Everywhere and always, for every nation and nationality, the New Year's garland is associated with the anticipation of the holiday. ...New Year's garland makes the holiday bright! Shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, these Christmas tree decorations create a unique romantic atmosphere on a dark New Year's Eve or, on the contrary, become part of a noisy festive feast, giving joy to both children and adults.

    Slide 21

One of the main Christmas tree innovations was electric garlands (by the way, the first garlands appeared in the USA at the beginning of the 20th century and were so expensive that they were more often rented than bought. At first, such decorations were not at all harmless: garlands often caused fires - lamp the glass became heated and the needles flared up. Over time, they began to be made of durable glass using durable dyes).

    Slide 22

Electric garlands, previously a simple chain of light bulbs, today look much more aesthetically pleasing and varied. Originally shaped light bulbs, “dressed” in snowflakes, flowers, and berries, make electric garlands one of the most popular attributes New Year's holiday, creating a festive mood in an instant.
