Internet is good but download speed. Educational video: How and why Internet speed is cut over WiFi. Services for operational testing

Hello! Today I will share with you my thoughts on how to be and what to do if your Internet speed is lower than declared by the operator. But first things first. Many netizens, however, do not think about some points when they ask: “Why is my Internet speed slow?”. Therefore, to begin with, let's define the terminology in order to correctly understand the essence of what is happening. As a rule, everyone talks about speeds as something abstract. Or they simply claim that “there is no speed”, that there should be speed and that’s it, without going into technical details.

The concept of Internet speed. What is speed?

Speed is the number of megabits that the Internet provider gives to the subscriber within the selected tariff. The more of them, the faster the Internet should work, many will say, but not everything is so simple. Indeed, in the past (in times of slow internet), loading heavy internet pages could be slow due to low internet speeds. But when the tariffs of operators have crossed the line of 2-3 megabits, you will no longer see a difference in the speed of loading web pages. Whether you have 3 megabits at a rate or 100 megabits, the pages will load approximately the same. Therefore, the only objective definition of speed is the time it takes to download any files to your computer from the Internet. In simpler terms, this is the speed of downloading files. The more megabits you have at the rate, the faster you can download your favorite movie, music album, games, etc. to your computer. It is very important to understand this. Firstly, by reading this information, you will increase your level of literacy, and secondly, you may not bother conscientious operators over trifles that you can figure out on your own.

How to check speed?

There is nothing complicated about this, the long-standing service http://www.speedtest.net/ is great for measuring the speed of your Internet. Many ISPs post a link to this service on their websites so that any user who wants to test their speed can do so. I recommend measuring the speed to the server of your operator, and / or to another operator closest to you on the map. For example, if the subscriber's place of residence is the Perm Territory, then it is logical to perform a speed test to Perm, Yekaterinburg. In this case, you get an objective test result, which for conscientious operators will not differ from the speed according to the tariff. Why is it important to measure the speed of only the node at your own/nearest neighbor point on the map? Yes, because within the network of your operator and up to the provider upstream of it, your operator is able to provide speed at a rate. But then the speed of your Internet cannot be guaranteed. And this is not the fault of the operator, this is how the worldwide network called the Internet works. Imagine the situation, you go to a site from your computer and download some file from it. In this case, you are the client and the site is the server. And a data transmission channel is established between the client and the server. The bottom line is - if the site is located within your operator (in your city, region), then you will download the file VERY quickly. But if the site is located somewhere in Japan, then the download speed can be simply negligible. Why it happens? It all depends on the number of intermediate communication nodes through which data is transmitted, and as a rule, the greater the number of intermediate nodes, the worse and slower the connection to the final resource (site). The entire internet is made up of ISPs. Small providers border on larger ones, and larger ones border on even bigger ones. Therefore, if you are downloading from a site that is geographically far away, then the packets of information passing from you to the site and from the site to you will have to go through the networks of many Internet operators. And this is a loss of speed, and in the case of game servers, an increase in ping.

Or maybe it's the computer?

No matter how strange it may sound, but the problem of low speed may be in the computer itself. Yes Yes exactly. One often hears such words: “I have the maximum tariff, I don’t understand why everything is so slow…”. You need to understand that the Internet is a connection that is already processed at the computer level. And the more productive and faster the computer itself, the faster web pages will load, applications will run faster, etc. On a slow and old computer, the Internet, in principle, will not work quickly. The minimum computer configuration to use the Internet relatively comfortably is at least a dual-core processor and at least 2 GB of RAM. A funny case: the owner of a 12-year-old computer was sincerely surprised at the constant “brakes and freezes”. At the same time, she claimed that “once” this computer worked normally on the Internet. Just “once upon a time” the Internet itself was different, there were few pictures in it, the sites had mostly textual information, a minimum of animations. What do we see now? Everything has changed a lot, sites began to be filled with a huge number of pictures, graphics, animations everywhere and other fat flash technologies. Modern Internet old computers digest, as they say, "with a scratch."

Software

Your favorite computer may have many programs installed for a variety of tasks. However, not all of them are equally useful. Please be careful when installing programs on your computer, there may be hidden checkboxes and other tricks, thanks to which completely unnecessary and even harmful software can get onto your computer. I have personally seen programs that are offered as an anti-virus solution, Internet defender, system optimizer, etc. So all these are potentially dangerous programs that, once they get into your computer, can greatly affect its operation. Can cause "glitches", freezes, slow application launch. Due to one such malware, the speed of the Internet can easily drop. I can give a very good recommendation for such a case: keep only those programs on your computer that you really need. Get rid of various managers, optimizers, toolbars and so on. By doing this, you will put things in order in the system and get rid of unnecessary system resource eaters, and as a result, the speed and responsiveness of your computer will increase.

Viruses do not sleep

Viruses can be one of the causes of slow computer performance. By executing their algorithms, some viruses can use 100% of the resources available to the computer. For example, bitcoin mining. As a result, the computer will work extremely slowly, and the user will be perplexed what happened. No need to neglect anti-virus protection, it is needed. Without a decent antivirus program, your computer will be completely defenseless against any danger. In order not to reinstall WIndows every month and lose installed programs and valuable information, your computer must have an antivirus that can protect you in any situation. In Russia, the top three anti-virus protection includes: Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Dr. Web and ESET NOD32. Any of them will provide a sufficient level of security.

I tried to describe the main situations in which it may seem that the Internet is slow. But often, the problem is not in it, but in the computer itself. You need to keep track of what is installed, downloaded, etc. to prevent system clutter and other infections. I wish you all a fast Internet, and the pleasure of using a computer :) See you soon!

I think every active user of the World Wide Web has faced the problem of low Internet speed. Oddly enough, but this is a fairly common occurrence. Usually, after the speed becomes slow, all the barrels roll on the provider, they say the provider is to blame and gives slow Internet. But it is not always the case! There can be many reasons. It is precisely about these reasons that slow down our Internet that I will tell in my article.

But before you start, you need to take a speed measurement and compare it with the one that your provider provides you with according to your tariff plan. The test is necessary because usually users measure the speed so to speak by eye. Here the page of the site began to load slowly, or the movie is slowly downloaded. Of course, you can also evaluate it by eye, but it is best to do it through special services. After you measure the incoming and outgoing speed, you can already understand exactly how bad everything is and look for the reasons.

Well, now let's go directly to the main reasons.

What are the reasons for the low speed of incoming and outgoing Internet?

  1. The reason may be in the Internet Explorer browser. It often happens that the user used the Google Chrome, Opera, Mozila Firefox browsers to access the network. And then I started using Internet Explorer and noticed that pages load much more slowly. This is the fault of the Internet Explorer browser. It is very slow on its own and it is not recommended to use this browser to surf the web.
  2. Various programs are running on a personal computer that download something. Or some programs are simply updated, for example, an antivirus, or you are simultaneously listening to music via the network, an online toy is launched and a movie is also loaded through an online cinema. If you have purchased a tariff from a low-speed provider by itself, then, of course, so many simultaneously loaded operations on the network will slow down the Internet very much.
  3. The processor can not cope and is loaded with various processes under 90-100%. In order to check the CPU usage, you need to press + + , then select the task manager. After that, you will see the processes and CPU usage as a percentage. If the CPU usage is under 90-100%, then you will have to close some processes to reduce the load.
  4. The computer has become infected with viruses that send spam, download any files from the network, block access to the Internet in Windows settings, or change the settings for accessing the network. There are also viruses that penetrate browsers and open various sites in a new window when you are online through those browsers that are affected by the virus.
  5. On the PC, special programs are installed and running that speed up the Internet or save traffic. So programs, especially programs for saving traffic, can be guilty of a low Internet connection.
  6. If you have Internet connected through your home phone, then check all the wires for bareness.
  7. The server from which you download files may be heavily loaded. In this case, the jump speed will be very small. Also, the administration of the site that you can visit can impose a speed limit, or use cheap hosting, which greatly affects the speed of loading the site.
  8. If you are using wi-fai, then the problem may be due to the low signal of the wi-fai itself. For example, you are far away from your router. Move closer to the router and the problem should be solved.
  9. Your network card is faulty. The most common problem. As practice shows, it is very difficult to determine whether your network card is working or not. It will be easily detected in the system, show a reaction to the included cable and notify you that the cable is connected, but when it comes to full-fledged work, then everything will begin. To check your network card, it is best to connect the internet to another computer. If everything goes well on another PC, then your network card is covered, or the drivers have flown. Try reinstalling the drivers on the network card, if the situation does not change, then call the wizard so that he can accurately diagnose your network card.
  10. If you are using wi-fai and have not set a password, then someone may have connected to you and is using your traffic. If two or three computers are connected to one router, then this will cause a small and low Internet speed.

I have reviewed the 10 most common reasons. If you do not find any of the above, then most likely the problem will be in your provider itself.

Periodically, the intensity of traffic transmission decreases. It is necessary to consider what to do if Rostelecom's Internet speed has dropped, how to correct the situation. There can be many reasons: equipment deterioration, line problems, computer problems, etc. To normalize the data transfer rate, you should check the traffic using any of the available services. In most cases, the problem of lack of Internet is solved on its own.

If the available methods of restoring traffic did not work, contact the operator and clarify what to do next.

The conditions regulated by the tariff plan and prescribed in the contract do not meet the user's expectations. There are several reasons for this:

  • an erroneous idea of the services offered by the provider, which is due to incorrect conversion of traffic units (MB, Mbps);
  • a decrease in the speed of the Internet, which should initially be higher, this often occurs at the stage of the final application, which is facilitated by factors: restrictions imposed by the provider, subtleties of the server, channel bandwidth, network settings;
  • the presence of OS applications that overload the system.

Services for operational testing

If Rostelecom's Internet slows down, speed problems are periodically observed, they use online services, or you can download a special program on your PC. Parameters that are checked:

  • incoming data;
  • outgoing data - the indicator is always lower than prescribed in the terms of the tariff plan;
  • packet data transmission time, while taking into account possible errors, the degree of congestion, and an interval of no more than 60 ms is considered sufficient.

How to measure the current speed through Speedtest?

If the Internet is slow, you need to take drastic measures, but first it is recommended to check how much the data transfer speed has dropped. You can test the connection using the Speednet service. This is the most popular way to test speed. Instruction:

  1. Turn off related equipment that is connected to the router.
  2. They close applications that put an additional load on traffic, since programs constantly access the data channel.
  3. The online PC check starts.
  4. Upon completion, the data must be checked, compared with the parameters stated in the tariff plan.

You can repeat these steps by first connecting the computer to the router directly. There is a possibility that in this case the values of the parameters will be different - higher.

Speed testing using the Rostelecom service

You must first turn off the related equipment that is connected to the router. If you are interested in the answer to the question why Rostelecom's Internet is slowing down, it is recommended that you first stop the applications. Then you need to go to the online service, start checking by clicking on the button in the working window. After a few seconds, the result will appear: information about the speed of incoming, outgoing data, as well as the waiting time for packet transmission.

Other services

Traffic is checked in other ways. Available services:

  • PR-CY.ru;
  • 2ip.ru;
  • CYPR.com.

In this case, you should perform the preparation according to the above instructions. There is another way. To test the speed, open a command prompt and type:

  • ping;
  • ping and server settings (to be checked with the operator).

Why did Rostelecom's Internet speed drop?

If the traffic is slow, this is facilitated not only by external factors: provider restrictions, an overloaded server, etc. When Rostelecom's Internet speed drops, other reasons are also considered, including:

  • breakdown of home equipment;
  • incorrect browser settings;
  • virus activity on PC;
  • overloaded OS;
  • processor malfunctions;
  • weather conditions in the area.

First, the most probable factors are considered, each of the options is checked for compliance with reality.

ISP side problems

If Rostelecom's Internet speed has dropped sharply, and this has not happened before, the reason may be a break in the line, a hardware failure on the part of the provider, a change in settings, a server overload, or routine maintenance to improve the functioning of the service. In the case when the connection periodically disappears, but then restores itself, this may indicate an unstable operation of the provider's equipment. The connection speed rises to the declared speed shortly after the data transfer stops.

Router as the reason for slowdown

There are 2 main factors:

  • failure of home equipment settings, which can occur due to frequent reboots, power surges, modem software updates;
  • if the speed periodically decreases, and the router was replaced the day before, the reason for the deterioration in the quality of communication may be the low bandwidth of this model of the device, since its parameters do not correspond to the characteristics of the cable being connected.

Try to change the login password when connecting to the router, manually configure it.

Browser problem

As the computer works, temporary files accumulate, they should be deleted. The cache is being cleared. If the connection quality has deteriorated after updating the browser, the settings are reset. Conversely, in the case when an old version of the browser is used, it should be updated. When connecting to a Rostelecom provider, low Internet speed may be the result of a personal change in settings. If it was not possible to correct the situation, it is recommended to check the quality of the connection in another browser.

Viruses

When the Internet drops out or the data transfer speed decreases, you should run a PC scan program for viruses. The reason for the decrease in traffic is the loading of a personal computer with virus software. The fewer applications open at the same time, the faster the PC runs. Antivirus sometimes also creates an additional load, so it is recommended to turn it on periodically.

Traffic limit

If Rostelecom's Internet speed has dropped, you should study the terms of the tariff plan. The reason may lie in the restrictions imposed by the provider on traffic in different time intervals. To get unlimited access to the Internet, it is recommended to choose a different tariff. Otherwise, you should reduce the time spent in the network, which will allow you to save the declared amount of traffic and correctly distribute it.

Problems with the computer operating system

OS failure can also be the cause: the PC began to work slower, the server response time increased, the speed dropped to a critical level, while the browser pages stopped loading. In this case, rebooting the OS will help. If possible, try connecting the router to another working computer. In the case when these manipulations provided access to the Internet, you will have to reinstall the OS on your personal computer.

Problems in the memory or processor of the PC

Overloading individual nodes can also be the reason for the decrease in Rostelecom's Internet speed. If the processor has weak characteristics, and in addition to that, a small amount of RAM is included in the PC, the personal computer will work slowly, which will also affect the speed of loading browser pages. In this case, it is recommended to review the capabilities of the PC; if necessary, individual nodes are replaced in order to increase its performance.

Weather

If Rostelecom's Internet speed suddenly drops, the reason may be strong wind, heavy rain, snowfall (depending on the time of year). Difficult weather conditions in the region lead to breakage of lines, collapse of poles, flooding of wells with communications. As a result, the user may be left without communication for several hours / days, it all depends on how quickly the line is restored. In this case, you can call the provider to find out the timing of the repair work.

How to increase the speed of Rostelecom Internet at home?

If a decrease in traffic is regularly observed, and sometimes it drops even lower, what to do in this case must be considered point by point:

  • you should check the PC settings (browser settings, RAM, processor characteristics);
  • the personal computer and router should be rebooted, at the same time you need to check the settings of home equipment;
  • The PC must be scanned for virus software.

If there are no internal problems, you should call the operator's hotline. In this case, you can not only find out about the cause of the breakdown, but also clarify how much time it takes to restore the line. In the telephone mode, they also clarify whether the conditions of the tariff plan have changed. If this information is confirmed, the contract should be reviewed. If you wish, you can try to adapt to the new conditions.

Changing the tariff plan and connecting using new technologies

In the event that the provider has changed the terms of the tariff plan, other connection options are considered. In this case, you need to take into account your own preferences (traffic volume, data transfer intensity). In addition, today more efficient connection methods are used, for example, based on xPON technology. The ADSL standard is already outdated, it has been replaced by Ethernet, 4G, wi-fi. Each of these technologies needs to be considered.

What are the reasons for the slow internet? We often have to ask ourselves this question. The reasons may be different. Unfortunately, at the moment, modern technologies do not allow us to use the Internet without interruptions. Why has my internet speed dropped? What's the matter? Let's figure it out.

Reasons for low speed

Why did the internet speed drop? Probably the most common reason for slow internet speed is problems on the provider's server. An ISP is a company that provides you with Internet access. This phenomenon of unexpected drop in speed usually occurs during severe weather. Powerful gusts of wind can disable a provider's workstation or break wires. In this case, you should call the provider and ask about the reasons for the lack of Internet.

Have you paid for internet? Everyone knows that the Internet is not a free pleasure, but not expensive either. It's likely that you're just busy at work or with your daily routine and forgot to pay your internet bill. In this case, the provider has every right to restrict your access to the Internet, completely turning it off. This situation is hardly related to slow speed. But it is quite possible that your provider can deal with malicious non-payers with such gentle methods.

Another reason for crashes and a sharp drop in Internet speed is a malfunction of the site you are visiting. On sites that do not suffer from the problem of a lack of users, but that, on the contrary, suffer from their dense flow, servers often fail due to channel overload. The capabilities of servers that process and transmit information are limited. If this is the reason, then this can be easily checked. Go to any other site and see how fast it will work. If this site works fast and well, then the problem is really only with that site. Move on to it later. The problem will surely be fixed. Most often, the Internet slows down precisely because of this.

The Internet may be slow due to a malfunction in your modem. We are talking about ADSL modems. Sometimes the telephone signal that enters the device in the same room as the modem disrupts, but simply blocks the signal going to the modem. Because of this, the modem reboots and it takes some time to restore its operation. There is a way out in this case. There is a device called "splitter". This is a small device that includes a common telephone cable. There are already two cables coming out of the splitter. One - to the phone, the other - to the modem. This allows you to separate the signals and not mix them. This is why internet speed drops sometimes.

And another reason for the slow operation of the Internet and a sharp drop in its speed is the congestion of the traffic provided by your provider. The volume of users who simultaneously use the services of the provider exceeds the norm. In this case, the connection speed may be significantly reduced.

So we start by determining what operating system is on our computer. And that our computer meets the requirements for the normal operation of this operating system. To do this, hover over the shortcut Computer, right-click and open properties.

If you have a windows 7 operating system, then the following computer parameters are required for its normal operation.

  1. Processor with a clock frequency of 1GHz (GHz) or higher.
  2. RAM (RAM) - from 1GB (gigabytes) and above, but preferably, of course, starting with two.
  3. Free space on the hard disk is at least 20 GB, but preferably 50, because when updating the OS (operating system) it will increase in size and eat up disk space.
  4. DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver version 1.0 or higher.
  5. From my experience of using windows 7 as an OS, I will say that these are the minimum tactical and technical data under which it is impossible to achieve high computer speed. Seven compared to XP requires a lot of system resources for its functioning.

Five Possible Causes of Slow Internet Speed

We always follow the path of least resistance:

  • We determine the parameters of the computer. To do this, we are guided by the foregoing. The processor may not be able to handle the data stream, especially when downloading files from torrent trackers.
  • If you use the Internet Explorer browser to access the Internet, then try to do this by replacing it with Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox, I assure you that it helps a lot.
  • Check if windows is automatically updated on the computer, the anti-virus system is running, if resources are downloading from the Internet, or if some programs are open. web browser. Also check the processor load in the task manager mode, if it is loaded at 100%, then this indicates an overload of the OS (on stationary computers this can be seen from the constantly burning OS process indicator), which means the provider has nothing to do with it.
  • Install (if not) a utility on the computer to check the temperature of the main components of the computer. When the processor, motherboard, video card is heated above acceptable standards, the computer freezes completely or partially. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly monitor the processes occurring inside the system unit. I think a small AIDA64 program will be enough to monitor our iron.
  • The computer is infected with a trojan virus, spam bot, or some other spyware. Which, secretly from you, turned off the protection and launched processes invisible to us.
    It can send spam, transfer your confidential data, e-mail passwords to its owner, upload any files to the system and thus occupy part of the access channel. The best advice for me was to download the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool from the official website and scan all local drives for viruses.

Thus, dear PC users, in my opinion, the above may be Top 5 Reasons for Slow Internet Speed. But what you say about this, I think in the near future I will read it in the comments.

And for those who forgot to get useful information
