Instagram users actively use the highlight section of stories to save publications that are significant from their point of view. Such publications are usually divided into categories. To give an account an attractive look, many use a special technique where each category is assigned its own icon. As a result, the highlight story feed looks like a menu designed in the same style. This post is about how to make icons for highlight stories on Instagram.

One of the elements of designing an Instagram account corresponding to modern trends, is the highlight story feed. Serious Instagram accounts have a clear and understandable heading in this section, that is, a breakdown into logical categories, as well as the design of each section with icons. This design gives a unified style to the entire feed with highlight stories and positions this feed as a menu. People are accustomed to beauty and clarity in the highlight story feed, so if you don’t have this section designed, then most likely no one will view it. In this post I tell you, how to make icons for highlight stories on Instagram.

How to create sections for highlight stories?

Before you start selecting icons for your highlight story feed, you should think about the categories in which you will save your stories. Categories are needed to logically sort the stories that you will add to the highlight feed. For those who are not aware, stories are saved in the highlight feed not only individually, but also in groups. You can include any number of stories in one group.

It is very important that one section contains stories that are logically connected to each other, and that the name of the section corresponds to what is stored in it. For example, in the "Reviews" section, you can save stories with reviews from your customers.

There is no need to spam the highlight stories feed with simple “everyday” content that can be viewed in your stories feed. Save only relevant content to the highlighted stories feed. For example, reviews left in stories will disappear after 24 hours, so it is advisable to store them in the highlight story feed so that new client could view all the reviews from your past clients. But a simple photo from your window, with the inscription “it’s a good day today”, is enough to leave in the feed of ordinary stories.

The sections of highlighted stories should be logical and reasonable. I decided to create the following sections in my account:

  • About me;
  • Services;
  • Customer reviews;
  • Education.

In the "About Me" section, I will save stories with important facts from my life, so that even a new subscriber can enter and quickly see who I am, what I do, who I hang out with, and so on. In the “Services” section I will save stories with the names and descriptions of the services I provide. In the "Customer Reviews" section, I will obviously collect reviews. Well, in the “Training” section there are courses that I plan to create.

Good sections for highlight stories can also be:

  • Examples of work - here you can display your best works;
  • My regalia - in this section you can save stories that tell about your achievements, awards, titles, medals, about the experts with whom you were trained, and so on;
  • Social networks - here you can give stories with links to your accounts on other social networks;
  • Sale - stores can create sale sections where they will post products that have special conditions.

How to make icons for highlight stories?

To create icons in the feed of selected stories, we will need to create stories with these same icons. For this we need:

  • Background - it will be responsible for what color our icons will be in the highlight stories feed;
  • The icons themselves are in PNG format. We will place them strictly in the center of the background;
  • Any image editor with which you can overlay an icon in PNG format on our background.

Instagram recommends using 9:16 format images for stories, so we will create stories with icons in the size of 1080x1920 pixels. The PNG format icon should be positioned strictly in the center and occupy about 75% of the image width.

You can choose a plain background or a gradient background. When choosing a background for the highlight story feed icons, it should be taken into account that the icons themselves, in PNG format, must stand out in contrast so that the user can recognize what is depicted on them.

You can find a large selection of free icons in PNG format on the FreePik.com page. Download icons suitable for your categories.

For my account, I chose a white background because it matches the account as a whole. I try to process posts in light colors, so I will insert dark gray PNG icons on a white background. This is what my stories ultimately look like, which I will save in the highlight stories feed.

How to pin icons in the highlight ribbon?

Having prepared pictures with icons, upload them to the story feed as usual. Next, go to your account and click on the circle with a plus sign at the very beginning of the highlight story feed.

In the window that opens, select one story with an icon and click next.

On the page that opens, enter the name of the section with this icon. Here you can edit the cover if you think it is not centered correctly. But, I do not recommend doing this, since it is very difficult to manually place the icon in the center, and even guess its exact size.

How to add a new story to the desired section?

We have created sections with icons and now we need to fill them out. How to do it? Let's say you recorded a short video with a client's review and want to add it to the reviews section. First, upload your video to your regular stories feed.

Once the story is created, open it and in the lower right corner click on the heart in the dotted circle.

In the window that opens, click on the “Add to current” button, after which a window will pop up at the bottom with all the previously created categories. Tap on the desired category and the story will automatically be saved in this category. Now it will always be available in the highlight stories feed in the section in which you saved it.

How to remove a story from a category?

To remove a story from a category, open it and click on the “More” button in the lower right corner. In the drop-down list, select "Remove from current". The history will be deleted from the section.

If you want to delete the section itself, then delete all the stories it contains, including the picture with the icon. The section will be automatically deleted.

For almost 6 years, Instagram fans could see an icon in the form of a retro Polaroid camera on their smartphones, but this Wednesday, May 11, the familiar icon changed. The reason for this was the active development of the application, which led to the need to change the outdated design.

Ian Spalter, who took on the development of the new Instagram logo and interface, tried to focus on the tasks of the program and its perception in the eyes of the average user. Based on this, he drew conclusions: Instagram is a colorful world of photography, so the icon should remind of this, and the application design should not obscure users’ photos. So he decided to discard everything unnecessary. To do this, he asked his colleagues to draw the old logo from memory: they remembered the outline, the lens, the flash and that’s it.

With quick perception, a person can only grasp general features, which means that more is not needed for a modern user who is accustomed to an intense life. A simplified image attracts attention and allows you to quickly navigate. Therefore, the old Instagram logo in the skeuomorphism style has sunk into oblivion, and in its place has come a rainbow silhouette of a camera.

Skeuomorphism, as a design trend, has been popular for the past 2 decades. It can be seen in all the old Apple software products that Scott Forstall worked on. Now minimalism is more popular in design. Therefore, the previous Instagram icon, which depicted the most realistic Polaroid camera, was no longer consistent with the progressively developing application.

The new Instagram logo is a schematic image of a camera on a background with a gradient. The color transition is reminiscent of the palette of a sunrise - from barely noticeable light yellow to sky blue, the main ones being orange and purple.

The icons for Instagram's companion apps (Hyperlapse, Layout, Boomerang) have also been changed to rainbow-colored schematic images. And the design of the program is now made in black and white, so that against its background the photographs look more colorful and nothing distracts the eye from them. The navigation buttons have also been updated, but the functionality and operating principle of the interface remain the same.

Do you like the new design?
